Stichting Maashrooms

A nudge to step outside into nature

Nature often begins closer to home than you'd think. During our mushroom walks, you'll discover how much life is hiding in the forests of South Limburg. Maybe that's just the nudge you need to get outside more often.

Why mushrooms?

Because they're remarkable

Mushrooms come in the most varied shapes, sizes, textures, smells and colours — and in all kinds of flavours too, though we'd advise against just eating wild mushrooms. On the Sint-Pietersberg near Maastricht alone, in De Dellen near Meerssen, in the Savelsbos near Gronsveld, and in Zutendaal just across the Belgian border, you can come across a surprising number of different species.

Our mission

From curiosity to connection

Sometimes a bigger discovery starts very small.

With a single mushroom you've never noticed before.

Stichting Maashrooms wants people to experience just how much there is to discover in the nature close to home. We hope a first introduction to the world of mushrooms leads to something that lasts: from curiosity, to more attention for nature, getting outside more often, and a growing connection with the natural world.

About us

The team behind Maashrooms

The Maashrooms initiative was started in 2023 by Chevonne Hagens. Joris Heine joined shortly after as co-founder. In February 2026 the initiative became Stichting Maashrooms, with Marieke Käller-Van Megen as chair and Sofianna Bonovolia as secretary of the board. Read more on the About us page.

Our walks

A morning in the forest, with someone who knows the way

A mushroom walk is a walk through nature where we go looking for mushrooms together. We follow a relaxed route and keep stopping for whatever we come across along the way.

There's no fixed checklist to get through. It's mostly about learning to use your senses to take in nature: look at the shape, colours and small details of a mushroom; discover the many different smells of mushrooms; learn about the surroundings mushrooms tend to grow in; feel the different textures, and so on.

So you don't need to know a mushroom field guide by heart to join in. Experiencing nature together is what matters most.
