About
Mission
Are you tired of sitting inside at home alone, doom scrolling your way into madness? We sure were!
Our mission is to reconnect young people with nature, by going into nature hunting mushrooms, learning how to grow mushrooms and more. Great for our mental and physical health, plus it’s fun!
By organising various community events and workshops on request we learn about and appreciate the ecosystems that make life on earth possible.
Values
Besides reconnection, our other core values are: circularity, solidarity and curiosity.
How do we promote these values? We organise fun, informative events that are designed to offer mushroom novices a helping hand into the wonderous world of mushrooms.
Most of all, we want to promote conversations that lead people to connecting with others and forming a community that shares knowledge, materials and friendships.
Origin story
Maashrooms, a community of local mushroom enthusiasts, is an initiative launched by Chevonne Hagens after she founded Fungi for Future, a start-up aiming to replace wasteful packaging with a mycelium-based alternative.
Thanks to CODE 043, a Maastricht-based foundation that stimulates youth participation (which has been discontinued unfortunately), Chevonne received funding to organise mushroom-related workshops. However, there were a lot of responsibilities yet not enough people to manage them.
After she encountered Joris Heine during an entrepreneur speeddate at YES Maastricht, things got kicked into next gear. They found three other volunteers: Didianne helped with preparing workshop materials, Jop helped with his expertise on cultivating mushrooms and Marc gave us a glimpse into his seemingly everlasting stream of knowledge about identifying mushrooms and plants in the wild.
In this picture our team is posing with participants of our “growing mushrooms on a log” workshop, our team is dressed in black on the right.
